Common Questions

Is group therapy better than individual therapy?+

Group therapy is helpful for anyone who has trouble connecting with others. You may struggle with connection for many different reasons, like anxiety, depression, trauma, or feeling like a burden to others. You can work on these goals in individual therapy, but in a group setting, you will have more opportunities to practice building relationships with others in a safe environment. Group therapy is a great way to learn how to reconnect with people.

Group therapy is helpful for most areas that individual therapy is helpful for. Almost all the reasons we come into therapy are related to our relationships. That’s why being in a group can be super helpful to support a variety of challenges.

What is group therapy like?+

Group therapy is usually a 90-minute meeting with your therapist and 5-9 others. In group therapy, you can connect with others experiencing similar struggles. Your therapist will guide the group through interacting with one another so that everyone can participate and learn more about themselves. After practicing new ways of building relationships in group therapy, you can return these new skills to the other meaningful relationships in your life.

You may be thinking that you don’t want group therapy. It’s probably not what you came to this clinic looking for. But if you want to feel more connected with other people, group therapy can help you.

Almost every challenge in therapy revolves around our relationships. Almost every person in therapy has worried about being a burden to other people. Almost every person has learned from someone else that what they’re going through isn’t important.  Almost  every person wants to feel close and connected to others. That’s why almost every challenge is actually a relationship challenge. That’s why group therapy is so great at helping people overcome these hurdles. Group therapy is a great and safe place to experiment. You’ll quickly relearn how being vulnerable connects you with others. You’ll see how expressing your emotions brings you closer to people, instead of pushing them away. And you’ll relieve the pressure of holding onto the experiences and emotions you’ve been carrying for so long. Ultimately, relieving that pressure will ease your symptoms and help you feel more connected to yourself and others.

Group therapy meets weekly. Each group therapy session lasts 90 minutes (twice as long as individual therapy). That way, everyone can participate and learn about themselves. Then you can take those new skills back into your world to deepen your connection with the people you care about most.
